Hey Stevie, can you pass me an XL Gasol Jersey?

Monday, February 15th, 2010

I had to finish this!  I started this drawing way back in December.

Gametime @ Staples.  Lakers Vs. Knicks.  November 24, 2009.

Gasol:  post victory.  Kobe is next to him talking to George Lopez.

After the game, I went into the Team LA Store.  My wife came over to me and said, “Stevie Wonder is right over there.”  I was like “Wha–” and spun around.  He was like 5 feet away trying to keep a low-pro (hahaha… absolutely impossible)!

The HUGE bodyguard next to him was really nice to everyone, but the store staffers were clamoring, “no photos please.”  So this is my mental picture!

At the start of the game, they showed all the celebrities on the Jumbotron. But when Stevie popped on, the stadium announcer addressed the crowd with a proper introduction:

“Ladies and Gentlemen, Stevie Wonder is here tonight.”

Maybe it was to let him know what was happening, but it came off feeling larger than life. The whole crowd roared and he busted that big smile.

Pilar’s herb garden is crawling with new plants.  I can smell ‘em all the way from the kitchen.

OPEN THIS DOOR RIGHT NOW.  I need to get out there and conduct a full investigation.  Smell test.  Taste test.  Face rub test.  C’mon, I’m doing you a favor over here.

I mean it’s not like I’m one of those lazy cats at the garden center.  They’re amateurs.

BBQ Weather?

tilapia

Almost.  Even though it’s a bit chilly these days to eat outside, I’ve been a-grillin for a few weeks.

Tilapia + corn on the cob + Hudson sunset = tasty dinner.

In case you haven’t cleaned up the old grill from last season, I’ve included an inspirational film strip to summon your inner griller.

I’m Only 1/8th Irish…

pipers2…but tonight I felt a respectable 7/8ths!  Corned beef, potatoes and cabbage, plus a delicious Guinness- for Strength.   Those are bag pipes next to my newly deaf ear.  The best part was when the old fella lost his balance and I was able to say “Piper down!”

Weekend Project or UFO Landing?

Sunday, March 8th, 2009

I needed something small for my office that could double as a stool or side table. So, I borrowed a jigsaw from a friend and freestyled a shape on a piece of wood I had laying around. This is what I came up with.

Pretty simple. Furniture grade maple ply. Maple edge “hot glue” veneer all the way around. Vintage hairpin legs- eBay. 9 screws. 18 washers.

Horton Premiere Ticket

After a couple years of work, this is one exciting weekend. Horton is at a theatre near you and I can’t wait to hear what people think. So far the reviews have been great! I’m proud of the work Blue Sky did on this movie. I bet Dr. Seuss would have liked to watch it with us. Here’s a picture of us at the LA premiere with Carol Burnett. She did an amazing job as the voice of the Kangaroo.

Carol Burnett

What did I do on this film? Well, I storyboarded lots of ideas. One of my little gags is the “YEAH!” guy in the crowd. He seems to get laughs. Another moment is the “We Are Here” chant, which stayed pretty true to the book.

There are two parts in the movie I’m most proud of: the “Hall of Mayors” and “Dentist” sequences. The “Hall” was inspired by an unforgettable visit ten years ago, through a golden corridor in the Vatican, Italy. There were paintings from the floor to the ceiling and as far as you could see. I was very happy with the scope of the sequence when I saw it on the big screen. Most of the paintings are my actual storyboards- which the art department painted. In the “Dentist” sequence I came up with the idea of having the Mayor accidentally take novocain to the arm, causing all the limp arm shenanigans and plenty of laughs!

What a fun movie- I hope you enjoy it!
