Bed-Stuy Kickflip

Friday, February 19th, 2010

Brownstones to Red Dirt is a beautiful documentary by Chad Walker and Dave Lamattina, both of which are my collegues at Blue Sky. It’s a pen-pal story that connects at-risk sixth graders living in Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn and war-torn orphans living in Freetown, Sierra Leone.

This postcard is only 1 of about 150 more being made in an effort to help build a new school for the orphans.  There will be a ONLINE BENEFIT AUCTION on eBay starting March 6th.

Hey Stevie, can you pass me an XL Gasol Jersey?

Monday, February 15th, 2010

I had to finish this!  I started this drawing way back in December.

Gametime @ Staples.  Lakers Vs. Knicks.  November 24, 2009.

Gasol:  post victory.  Kobe is next to him talking to George Lopez.

After the game, I went into the Team LA Store.  My wife came over to me and said, “Stevie Wonder is right over there.”  I was like “Wha–” and spun around.  He was like 5 feet away trying to keep a low-pro (hahaha… absolutely impossible)!

The HUGE bodyguard next to him was really nice to everyone, but the store staffers were clamoring, “no photos please.”  So this is my mental picture!

At the start of the game, they showed all the celebrities on the Jumbotron. But when Stevie popped on, the stadium announcer addressed the crowd with a proper introduction:

“Ladies and Gentlemen, Stevie Wonder is here tonight.”

Maybe it was to let him know what was happening, but it came off feeling larger than life. The whole crowd roared and he busted that big smile.

Beneath the palm trees of Palm Springs, on a street called Monterey, there was a house.  A house that was built in 1958.

51 Years later, we sipped drinks by the pool and listened to Frank on the Hi-Fi.  We even drove by his old home.  We rung in the new year with brothers, sisters and friends.  We reminisced.  And everything came into perspective.

Why not call it a day

In a sensible way

And we’ll remain friends

This is an old sketch of my friend Patrick Kochakji.

Friends said I “nailed him” with this one.  There wasn’t any nailing, no nailing went about, that’s disgusting.  I wonder if he has the drawing on his fridge still.  What’s up Patrick– if you see this.

I decided to give it an update.  We used to jam together in a band that met random Thursday nights, more as an excuse to drink Tecate than to make a record.  His wedding video contains impressive footage of me dancing like a imbecile to James Brown, embarrassing everyone within an 8 foot radius.  I wish I could destroy those parts.  Patrick is a really talented artist and musician who also works in animation.  He is in my Amigos section–>

Obama

HISTORY. I’m so happy! January 20, 2009!!!

I’m re-posting this from back in February. It’s going to be a tough for our next president, but with Obama in charge and a democratic congress, I think we can get back to being progressive, innovative, and establish a new relationship with the rest of the world. PEACE and LOVE, PEACE and LOVE…

Abbey Plains

On Wednesday there was a super fun lunch with Cindy, Karen, Moroni and me in White Plains. We pitched each other story ideas, just like the amazing lunch they had one day at Pixar. (Yeah, exactly like that, except every idea was about farting). After lunch we invaded the farmers market and scored a big ass watermelon- plus some pistachios. We chilled the melon and cut it up in the story room. Funny- as we walked into the building, about fifty people asked us if we had vodka in it. Never heard of that. Hmm… have to try that sometime.
