Pier Jump

pierjump3

THE 80′S… neon wetsuits and Winchell’s doughnuts. Waxing your Timpone, Hayward, or Burke on the sidewalk.  The mixed smell of damp alsphalt, low tide and fast food garbage. Oingo Boingo seeping, “ONLY A LAD…” from a car stereo.  I was such a scrawny little grom.

I would paddle out southside at the Huntington Beach Pier.  The plan was to sit with the rippers and watch them go.  Then I’d snatch the leftovers on the inside, copying what I saw.  That’s how you learned.

On the ultra-early mornings this rare stunt would develop.  A few dawn patrolers would use the lingering cover of night, slip over the rail and jump off the pier, skipping the paddle out all together.  Everyone in the lineup would hoot, and throw those ear piercing whistles you hear at concerts or ball games.  It was rad.

Sometimes the lifeguards would call the cops.  Sometimes they pretended not to see anything.  It all depended on who you were.  The fine was something like $100 + a court date.  You know, public safety.  Whatever cops.  Getting away with a pier jump had to be the best.

Weekend Project or UFO Landing?

I needed something small for my office that could double as a stool or side table. So, I borrowed a jigsaw from a friend and freestyled a shape on a piece of wood I had laying around. This is what I came up with.

Pretty simple. Furniture grade maple ply. Maple edge “hot glue” veneer all the way around. Vintage hairpin legs- eBay. 9 screws. 18 washers.

Here’s a picture of me trying not to die at the Ladera Skatepark. Photo courtesy the fiancini herself.

There are some local kids tearing the place apart. My brother Mark (pottery whiz) was also carving out some nice lines. At the end of the night we tried a little follow-the-leader. As soon as we dropped in, the lights went out and it was pitch black. Mark wiped and I went into a wall. Oh the pain…

Side note. I have been informed the best contender for possible movie goodness of 2006 is: SNAKES ON A PLANE
Did I mention it’s staring Samuel L. Jackson? You must click this.

Furnitura

As a kid, I spent many Saturday afternoons in Grandpa’s garage. It was near the beach and I could smell the ocean. And It was there that I learned what it meant to create something. So many woodworking pieces came out of that garage: drafting desks, cribbage boards, lamp bases and jewelry boxes, just to name a few. He is gone now, but in his later years, he always had at least one ongoing woodworking project. He had a great ability to create something both beautiful and functional. An article was written about him and his work in Fine Woodworking Magazine.

A short while ago, I made this bookcase and this tv cart for my apartment:

As I built these pieces, I remembered some tips he used to tell me. It was as if back then, he knew I would use those tips one day. I guess he left quite an impression on me.

Withering Cold + Sk8rs of Old

It is a coldee. Little plants that think they can make it are leaning out from under the ice. One of the radiators in my apartment has gone nuclear and melted it’s own cap. I just hope the thing doesn’t pop. Speaking of pop, (how’s that for a segue) there is a new lil’ movie coming out with that crazy, muy loco skater Jason Jessee. There’s some sick slo-mo clips of him lofting frontside ollies in a pool. Salba is talking about JJ’s ollies like they come from dreams. The footage feels like flying. As for Jessee, I’m glad to hear he is still alive. He makes Jesse James look tame.

So… what was the deal with the Transworld article where he is burning chickens with a blowtorch? I thought it was fake. Turns out it may not be. Lately, it seems like there’s been a ton of documentaries on the old skool generals. My brother tried to get me to watch the Duane Peters Story on DVD, I heard it’s good.

Ladera Park’s skatepark just opened. Back in Cali over the break, my brothers and I snuck into the park. I got to carve some, and then… busted by security. Now it’s legit. Well, at least for “community residents” (read: pass card). Tz said there was a little ripper busting 3 foot fronsides out of the back pool.

•Some shots my brother took. Glad I didn’t slam (no pads).
